A Stone’s Throw：近在咫尺

大部分同学小的时候可能都玩过丢石子的游戏，拿起一块小石子，朝着一定的方向用力丢向水面，石子就能在水面上弹射很多次，泛起的层层涟漪颇有趣味。丢石子这个动作可以表达为throw the stone。但同时我们也知道，无论我们用大多的力气，对于一个小石头而言，我们也不能像专业运动员扔铅球那样把它扔得很远，如果我们把throw the stone倒过来，变成a stone’s throw，就表达了丢一个石头的距离，换言之，就表达距离非常近、近在咫尺的意思。

剑桥词典对a stone’s throw的定义非常简单粗暴：a very short distance，非常短的距离。所以，在使用的使用就把a stone’s throw当做a very short distance就好了，比如下面的例子：

从上面的例子可以看到，a stone’s throw的用法是something is (at) a stone’s throw (away) from something，括号里的为可选项。一般地，表示A离B有D的距离，我们可以用A is (at) D (away) from B，这里的D就是表示距离的短语，比如这里的a stone’s throw或者a … distance或者就是距离的数字比如10 km等等。

A Stone’s Throw的出处

也许你会很惊讶，这个习语至今已经有超过500年的历史了。当前记载这个习语最早的使用是在1526年Wycliffe’s Bible中，其中有描述：“he gat himself from them, about a stone's cast”，在这里用的是a stone’s cast，和a stone’s throw是一样的。同样在16世纪，这个习语还用在非宗教场合下，比如Arthur Hall翻译的The Ten books of Homers Iliades中，就写到：“For who can see a stone’s throw of ought thing in land or plaine?”

直到18世纪，stone’s throw这个表达才被真正确定一下。1712年，John Arbuthnot在他的著作The History of John Bull中多次引用了这个表述：

“In spite of all applications the patient grew worse every day; she stunk so, nobody durst come within a stone's throw of her, except those quacks who attended her close, and apprehended no danger. ”

从这之后，a stone’s throw这个习语就被大量运用用来表示距离很近，成为人们喜闻乐见的一个表达方式。
