Elephant in the Room: 显而易见却不愿谈及

如果你看到房间里面赫然站着一只大象，但是其他人都仿佛没有看到它，你肯定会在惊讶之余倍感疑惑：为什么一只大象会出现在这里，为什么大家都装作没有看见？这就是elephant in the room想要表达的意思：一件大家都看得到的事，但是所有人都不愿意谈及。

举个栗子，当你和同事聚完餐后，视角一瞥，看到同事A的嘴角粘着一粒米，你要告诉他还是不告诉他呢？你看了看其他同事的反应，都没人说出来，你想了想，还是不说为好，免得尴尬。这就是典型的elephant in the room：大家都知道，但是为了避免尴尬都不说出来。

剑桥词典对(an) elephant in the room的定义是：If you say there is an elephant in the room, you mean that there is an obvious problem or difficult situation that people do not want to talk about. 意思就是避而不谈，或者更直白点，“装瞎”。

Elephant in the Room的出处

根据维基百科的描述，Elephant in the Room这个习语最早可以追溯到1814年诗人Ivan Krylov写的寓言“The inquisitive Man”，讲述了一个人去博物馆，看到了各种各样的小玩意儿，但唯独没有注意到一头大象，后来，Elephant in the Room就成为了一句谚语开始流传。Fyodor Dostoevsky在他的小说“Demons”里写到：“Belinsky was just like Krylov's Inquisitive Man, who didn't notice the elephant in the museum…”这里就引用了这个故事。

《牛津词典》记录了1959年首次使用这个习语的文章，刊登于当时的《纽约时报》：“Financing schools has become a problem about equal to having an elephant in the living room. It's so big you just can't ignore it.”所以可以推测，在1959年之前，这个习语已经被广泛使用了。直到今天，Elephant in The Room不但仍然在被使用，而且还传播到了世界各地，具有较大的影响力。
